Children of women in prostitution are penalized
for no fault of theirs. These children face social
ostracization along with their mothers. Many a times
in spite of all the effort by the mother to save the
children from falling into the same trade the inevitable
happens and the vicious cycle continues. The girl child
is forced into the same trade and the boys are trained
to become pimps. It is in this context the intervention for
the prevention of second-generation was developed
and implemented.
Taking into account the fact that these children are
exposed to various traumatic experiences in their
formative years which leaves permanent scars in
their lives hampering the normal emotional and social
growth it was felt that there was a need for a healing
space to develop coping skills to adapt in the
mainstream world. It is with this objective that the
concept of transition centers and drop-in centers was
evolved.
These centers provide for the holistic psycho-social
and scholastic needs of the child. The concept of
bridging the space also provides coping skills that
will support the child to competently live in the
mainstream world.
The first transition center was started in the year 1996
with just 5 children today in 2007 the transition centers
and the drop in centers together have reached out to
over 5000 children. Using education as a tool thousands
of vulnerable children are being prevented from being
inducted into flesh trade or sex trafficking.
